The waste ash that is produced is landfilled onsite. The mixture chemically bonds with the sulfur dioxide. The dry scrubbers work by piping the plant’s exhaust emissions through a lime mix fed by adjacent silos. “Bag Houses” are attached to the chimneys to remove particle matter from escaping. The scrubbers remove 100,000 tons of sulfur dioxide emissions per year. In order to meet new federal clean air standards set for 2014, new scrubbers were added to the chimneys to cut down on air pollution.īefore upgrades were completed, Homer City Power Plant was labeled as one of the dirtiest power plants in the country it is now one of the cleanest.
